You never liked Vanessa Hadid from the first time you had to deal with her for a case once your boyfriend had moved over to the DA’S office, but now she was less likeable. You booked the weekend away at the start of the summer to the Hampton's with Amanda, Jesse, Billie, Noah, Liv, Sonny and yourself. Sonny had been approved for the weekend months ago until the week before when a case came in that she had put Sonny in charge of and she told him his leave would have to put on hold until further notice.
You were upset having to go by yourself but Sonny promised that the next full weekend he had off he would book somewhere for you guys to stay just you two. Really you weren’t too upset, you were having a weekend on the beach with your two best friends and your non blood niece’s and nephew. You had just walked into your hotel room after a fall day on the beach and dinner with Liv, Amanda and the kids. Sonny loved the photos you and Amanda had been sending him throughout the day while he was stuck in the office, especially the ones in your purple two piece.
Y/N 8.30: Just got back to the room babe. Just going to shower, text in a bit x
Sonny had just thrown himself on the couch after taking off his suit and opening a beer just coming home himself.
Sonny 8.34: Wish I was there to help you wash all that sand off your body.
You came out of the shower in pink silk night dress crawling into bed. You picked up your phone and read Sonny’s message giggling to yourself,
Y/N 8.45: Wish you were here to help me too, I had it in places that only your fingers can reach.
Sonny 8.48: You know I would have reached those places real good.
Sonny 8.50: Send me a photo babe, I miss you.
You opened your phone to camera and took a selfie of yourself on your back, the blankets down enough to see your hardened nipples raised through the silk of your nightdress. You sent it, the delivered notification appeared under the picture and arousal shot to your core waiting for his reply.
Sonny 8.52: You do know if I was there you wouldn’t need to be wearing that night dress, we wouldn’t be doing much sleeping either.
Y/N 8.55: What would you do to me Dominick?
You felt your panties dampen and you squeezed your legs together hoping the pressure would relieve something.
Sonny 8.58: I would push you back on your back and pull your panties off with my teeth. I would throw your legs over my shoulders and kiss up the inside of your thighs while your fingers thread into my hair.
Sonny 9: I love when you tug on my hair when you’re about to come.
Sonny 9.01: What would you do to me babe?
Y/N: 9.03: I would kiss down your neck, sucking on your sweet spot till you are a whimpering mess.
Sonny 9.05: That’s all you got?
Y/N: 9.08: I would push your boxers down taking your big hard cock into my mouth till you hit the back of my throat while I cup your balls. Just how you like it big boy.
Your hand was running over your clothed stomach fighting not to let it slip any lower just yet.
Sonny: 9.10: Then what?
Y/N: 9.12: If you want more I think it’s only fair that I get a picture too
Y/N: 9.13: Not just of your face.
The three dots appeared and then disappeared and then your phone started to ring via video call. You quickly adjusted yourself sitting up, your back on the head board and answered. Sonny’s face appeared with hooded eyes and a smirk.
“Sonny I said not just your face, come on, don’t be a tease babe”
Sonny chuckled and winked moving his iPad so it showed his bare chest and a sizeable tent in his boxers. You gasped and bit your bottom lip,
“That’s more like it” you purred.
“Before we go any further babe” Sonny cleared his throat “I have something for you in the inside pocket of your bag”
You jumped up out of bed rushing over with the phone in your hand, you unzipped the inside zipper in your bag and pulled out a pink velvet bag.
“What is it?” You raised an eye brow holding the bag up to the phone camera,
“Get back into bed and open it” Sonny’s voice was husky.
You rushed back to bed, moving a pillow so that you could lean your phone on it and you got into bed crossing your legs. You picked up the bag and you were startled when it started to vibrate and then it stopped. You pulled open the draw string bag tipping it up to pour the contents on the bed. You laughed out loud when a c shaped bright pink vibrator and a small travel size bottle of lube landed on the bed. You picked up the toy and it started to vibrate again,
“How are you doing that?” You looked over at Sonny through the screen.
He held his phone up to his iPad screen,
“I have the app babe” Sonny looked down at the screen pushing a button and the vibrator started to buzz fast and then slow and that fast again “Do you like it?” Sonny sat the iPad on the table next to the couch leaning it on the lamp giving you a full view of his body, his legs stretched out under the coffee table.
“I do. But I wish you were here instead”
“Me too babe” you saw Sonny ran his hand down his stomach rubbing himself through his boxers “I would give anything to feel your mouth around me” Sonny groaned and bucked his hips up into his hand. You gasped and reached up to knead your boob over your nightdress. Sonny looked at the screen and seen where your hand was,
“Bet you wished that was my hand, don’t you babe”
“Uh huh” you moaned rocking your hips on the mattress.
“Take it off babe please, let me see you- all of you” Sonny lifted his hips up to push his boxers down, his long hard member springing free.
You reached down to the hem of your night dress pulling it up over your head throwing it on the end of the bed. You heard Sonny whimper. So you lent down close to the screen pushing your boobs together and Sonny groaned wrapping his hand around himself giving himself a couple of pumps.
“Even on the other side of the screen you make me rock hard. Show me how wet I’ve made you”
You brushed a hand down over your stomach, getting up on your knees pushing your panties down to your knees, running your fingers through your opening bringing them to the screen. Sonny moaned when he saw your wet coating your fingers and he groaned again.
“All for you Dominick” You lifted your fingers to your mouth sucking them clean pulling them out with a pop and giving Sonny a wink through the screen.
“You better catch up, I’ am not going to last much longer you teasing me like that” Sonny panted.
You picked up the vibrator, popping the lid of the lube open squirting some on either end of the toy. You moved the pillow and adjusted yourself so the screen was on your face and top half laying back on the pillow. You bent your legs up bringing the toy to your opening,
“Let me put it in before you start it” You looked at Sonny who was watching you through the screen stroking himself lazily trying to hold off his release. You gasped as you slid the longer end into yourself till the short end was resting on your hardened pearl.
“Feel good?” Sonny’s voice was deep.
“Not was good was you” You turned your head to look at the screen.
“Ready?”
“Yeah” your mouth went slack as the vibration started slow “Oh” you moaned, your hands running form the tops of your thighs up your torso to your breast.
“Twist your nipples like I do babe”
You saw Sonny fasten his pace on himself his eyes glued to the screen watching you. You nodded, jaw slack as you took your nipples between your thumb and pointer fingers twisting and tugging them.
“You like that babe?” you cleared your throat.
“Oh yeah” Sonny groaned, you could see his pre-come oozing out.
“Sonny” you moaned your back arching off the bed slightly “Faster-please” you could feel your release building fast and intense. Sonny reached for his phone tapping another button and the vibrations quickened, your legs beginning to shake “Touch your balls Sonny” you managed to gasp out. Sonny done as you asked, stroking himself fast with one hand and rolling his balls between his fingers with the other.
It hit you like a title wave of fire. Your legs shaking, your whole body was on fire. You let go of your nipples moving your hands to thread into your hair balling them into fists either side of your head, arching your back off the bed pushing your ass into the mattress as you squealed, your orgasm so intense repeating Sonny’s name over and over again.
You came down from your high, reaching down to pull the vibrator out throwing it to the foot of the bed still vibrating. Your eyes were pulled back to the screen still breathless when you heard the tell-tale grunting Sonny was about to come. You watched the screen intently making you wet again at what you were seeing.
Sonny was stroking himself feverishly, a light layer of sweat over his skin, his hair damp and mouth slack,
“Pretend it’s my mouth baby” you purred through the screen.
That’s all it took. Sonny tugged on himself and squeezed his balls and you saw the ropes of his salty come squirt out of him landing on his thighs, stomach and all over his hands. He slowed his strokes breathing heavy reaching for a tissue from the coffee table wiping his hands clean and then tapping a button on his phone and the vibrator stilled.
“I love you-That was hot” Sonny chuckled “Not as hot as you being here though”
“I love you to Sonny, but I’ll be home tomorrow”
“Wanna take a shower together?” Sonny grinned over the screen “Bring your pink friend with you, its water proof.”

Don’t Have to Tell Me Twice
A/N: I wrote this one kinda quick, maybe it’s not too bad. I’m trying to really work on my writing so I’m going to try to get the part two for Come Home to Me out soon. Enjoy!
Words: 2,333
Tumblr media
"The murmur is gone."
The words that stopped your heart, your breathing, and echoed in your mind for weeks, months, days, and years. The second those four words slipped from your sweet Eugene's lips, your world stopped. You held it together, but that night you cried yourself to sleep. You knew Gene would be shipping off soon, off to fight the war that he had so desperately been trying to claw his way to. You didn't want him to go, you knew better than to beg, so you didn't dare ask him to stay. His heart was with the war, and if he didn't go, his heart would never be at home. So you collected yourself the best you could and came to terms with him leaving. You didn't know how long he'd be gone or if you'd ever see him again. You two had known each other for several years now, him being the first person you met when your family moved to town when you were 13, and now you were inseparable. You and Eugene had just been together as a couple for about 9 months when he shipped out.
Seeing him off at the train station almost broke your heart entirely. Especially when he gave you that adorable half-smile of his standing out on the platform.
"You better not run off and find another gal on your way home when the war is over," you had said, in an attempt to lighten the mood, a small grin on your face.
"I'll try my hardest darlin'. Ain't nobody as pretty as you though, gotta make sure I come home so no one steals the prettiest girl in Mobile out from under me," Eugene smiles that smile that made you fall in love with him all over again, and your blush could be seen a mile away. The whistle of the train caught your attention and broke your smiles. It was time.
"Don't forget, mother and father want you over for supper every Sunday afternoon, and you can take Deacon on a walk anytime you like. Don't be shy, they love you," Eugene reminded you.
"I know, Gene. Thank you for reminding me, I'll make sure to give Deacon extra lovin' since you won't be there to spoil him." That dog had gone everywhere with you two the past few years, he had become like a child between the pair of you. You never saw you two without Deacon. The train whistle blew again, meaning it was time for Eugene to board. Tears had started to well up in your eyes, and Eugene pulled you into a tight embrace.
"Don't cry, sweetheart. I'll be back, I promise. I love you (Y/N)."
You hugged him back with everything in your body before pulling away.
"I love you too Eugene," your hands settled on his chest and his came up to cup your face, pulling your lips to his. You knew the next kiss shared between you two would a very long time from then, but you never thought it would be nearly 4 years later. In your heart, it felt like an eternity.
Life had been passing by, but not truly lived while Eugene was away. You had kept Gene's reminder in check, and you had supper with his family every Sunday evening and walked Deacon at least every other day. Since Eugene had been gone, you had moved out of your family's house into a small one bedroom house closer to town. It was exactly what you wanted, and everything you could ask for. Your parents had offered to help you purchase the small home, in exchange that you took classes at Alabama Polytechnic, and kept a small job. Three or four days out of the week after your last midday class, you were an assistant in the office at the elementary school downtown. You always loved seeing the kids during the school year, and when the summers rolled around, they always let you help out the rest of the staff with any repainting they did around the school. Most of the staff had gotten to know you, so they always tried to keep you busy and your thoughts off the constant worry in your mind.
To everyone else, it seemed as if you were doing just fine, but on the inside, you were a pile of shattered glass. Each waking moment was a struggle, every moment was filled with dread and worry. Your worst nightmare was hearing the news that no one wanted to hear, the news that made mothers, fathers, siblings, and significant others crash to their knees and weep. Each letter from Eugene was a small relief, but his letters were filled with glimpses into the hell he was living. He tried his hardest to spare you the gore and the hideous details of each day in the Pacific, but you knew he was struggling to keep it together. You did your best writing him back, you never wanted to glorify the quaint life of Mobile. That was a cruel thing to do to a man in war. Eugene's letters often came months late, and you may only receive one every 3-5 months. When you other best fried, Sidney Phillips returned from the Pacific, he did his best to comfort you when you were down. Although, he was still trying to help himself to recover from the horrors he had seen in the war himself. Since Sid's return home, you both decided to at least have lunch with each other once a week, usually every Tuesday. You were actually the one to help him get up the courage to finally ask Mary Houston it, a girl he had been pinning after since he was a young teenager. After a few months of them dating, Mary started joining you two for lunch, and you and her became friends. This became your routine, every Tuesday you three would meet at the little diner downtown, have lunch, talk, and enjoy each other's company. A year passed and one day, the couple sitting across from you couldn't stop smiling at each other. It warmed your heart to see them so happy together, but this affection was a little more than usual.
"Okay, you two," you giggle, setting your coffee cup down on the table in front of you, "y'all haven't stopped smiling at each other since you walked up. Something tells me that something is goin' on here that I just don't know about yet. You best spill the beans before I have to pull it out of ya."
They both laughed and Sid caught your gaze, a broad smile on his face. It clicked in your head and you already knew what he was about to say. A genuine smile spread across your cheeks, "Well Sid I hate to tell ya, but you might have a few men try to jump you when you announce that the Mary Houston is officially off the market for good." You all laughed and Mary gushed about how romantic it was when Sid asked her to marry him. Their engagement started a new branch of your life that helped you pull through each day. Mary began including you in things with her friends, and she always had a list of things to ask your opinion on each Tuesday. You never let the news break to Gene, Sid said he wanted to break the news to him himself, so you kindly agreed. You helped them plan their small engagement party, which was held at the new banquet hall down by the bay. That night, your heart ached that you couldn't have Eugene by your side, but you put a smile on your face for everyone. The wedding creating a new thread in life for you, which helped brighten your days. The couple decided to wait until the war was over to have the ceremony, mainly due to the fact that Sidney wanted Eugene to be his best man, even though you offered to wear one of Eugene's old suit coats over your dress and be a stand-in. He declined the offer, saying you were too pretty to be standing in for Eugene, that he needed the real deal.
Between the wedding planning, working at the elementary school, and attending college, before you knew it, another year had passed. You were painting a large cartoon farm in one of the halls at the elementary school when the news rang out on the radio nearby. The other ladies helping you paint went frantic.
"The war is over!"
"The troops are coming home!"
"No more war!"
You were stunned, the paintbrush still tight in your hand.
"(Y/n)! Aren't you excited, your lover boy is coming home!" That comment caught you, and the rest of the day, you couldn't wipe the smile off your face.
You called Sid the second you got home, questions flying from our lips. When do you think Gene would be home? Do you think he'll come straight home? You also told him to ask Mary what you should wear to the train station. He only laughed and said, "Slow down speedy, I don't know the answer to every question you've got now. We'll just have to hear from Gene first, he can answer more than I can. He might be rounded up for some cleanup work, so it could be another few months, but Mary said she'd come over tomorrow to help you find something."
Turns out a few months ended up being six before you finally got word from Eugene that he'd be home soon. You were ecstatic, well that was more of an understatement. Your mood improved, your smile brightened, and your heart ached less knowing Eugene would be returning home, alive. The exact date of Eugene's arrival was kept strictly between him and Sid, Eugene said he wanted it to be a surprise, which you hated. That boy was going to be the death of you as if he hadn't caused you any heart troubles already. Awaiting Eugene's arrival you tried to keep yourself busy instead of just staring out the window all day, and Eugene's mother was a huge help. It was currently a cool fall evening, you were at the Sledge household helping Mrs. Sledge do some cleaning. She was inside washing some of her glass plates and cups that she had on display in the dining room, and you were outside hanging freshly washed bedsheets, curtains, and other linens. Humming to yourself lightly, you hung up a bedsheet. The soft fabric flowing in the wind as you pinned the corners to the clothesline.
"(Y/N), dear! You have a visitor, I'm sending them out to you," Mary Frank's voice rang out from the back steps. You didn't bother shouting out a response, not wanting to try and yell across the yard. It was probably either Mary Houston or Sidney. Anytime they couldn't find you or get ahold of you, they always came here. You hang up the last sheet in your basket and smooth it out before you finally lookup. Your heart stops, and you freeze in your place. Through the sheets floating in the wind, you catch a glimpse of dark green moving towards you. Maybe I'm just seeing things, you thought.
"Gene," your voice is barely above a whisper, the words struggling to come out. The wind blows harder this time, the sheets floating through the air almost horizontal this time, and that's when you see all of him. The black shoes, the dark green pants, and coat, with a hat to match. He looks so different but just the same, all at the same time. His skin is tan, his shoulders are broader, and he stands taller than before. He makes his way to you, your breathing uneven, your hands shaking. Please don't be a dream, if it is, so help me God. Eugene stands a few feet from you now, that smile that you love so much appearing on his lips. You didn't think your heart could beat any quicker, but, oh boy, weren't you wrong.
"My mother tells me that I'd be able to find the prettiest girl in Mobile out here, you wouldn't happen to know her would ya?"
His voice was slightly deeper, rougher but it sends waves of comfort through you. A smile broke out on your face, a faint blush covering your cheeks. Before you knew it, your body lurched towards Eugene's and you had wrapped your arms around him in a hug. Tears rolled down your cheeks as Eugene gently pulled your head from his neck, using his thumbs to wipe the tears. "Don't waste those tears on me, I'm home now. You don't have to worry anymore darlin'."
"Ya know, Mitch Haygood kept asking me on a date at least once a month while you were gone, he made the mistake of catching me out with your mother about six months ago. Let's just say, he never asked again," you both broke out into giggles, both knowing how Eugene's mother can be.
"I'm glad she handled it so I wouldn't have to go give him a talking to when I got back. Can't have anyone stealing my girl when I'm away," Eugene replied looking down at you. He simply held you there after he spoke, just looking at you. His hands were cupped around your cheeks and jaw, his thumbs brushing your cheekbones. Your hands grip at the uniform cinched at his waist. His tongue reached out to quickly swipe across his lips. You hadn't kissed those lips in four years, and if you didn't soon you felt like your heart was going to jump out of your chest.
"You better kiss me, Eugene Sledge, before I go calling Mitch Haygood."
With a crack of that beautiful smile and a small rumble in his chest, Eugene replied, "Don't have to tell me twice, sweetheart."

----
She hadn’t expected to get woken up with kisses peppered all across her face, but she couldn’t complain when the lips that covered her skin finally met her own and a small hum of appreciation escaped from her.
“Morning sweetheart.” Ashton’s voice sounded raspy, tired. And she found herself grinning as she peeled back her eyes, to be met with amused hazel and a soft grin.
“Morning baby. You’re eager today.” She could see the tiredness around his eyes. It wasn’t as bad like when she’d first arrived and the circles were dark and he looked ready to collapse. She knew he was overworking himself and the last thing she wanted was a phone call saying he was heading home because he’d collapsed. Once was enough.
“Well I get to spend my day with you. I mean, not that I haven’t enjoyed the week we’ve had together, but-god I’m so excited for you to see what I’ve been planning with Matt. We’ve had this in the works for weeks, and you get to watch me do it this time.” A soft chuckle escaped her lips.
“Breathe, sunshine. You’re starting to go too quick for my tired mind to keep up with.” The tease in her tone made Ashton smirk as he shifted himself, pinning her between his legs, his arms pressed into the soft hotel bed either side of her head.
“Want me to go nice n’ slow?” She caught on quickly to his words, especially as his lips began to trail from her jaw down her neck, her breathing becoming a short gasp.
“Yes.” The word was barely breathed and he kept up a slow pace, his lips moving between her breast, a soft keen escaping her as he took one nipple into his mouth, shifting one hand to the other, rolling the bud between his finger and thumb.
After switching sides, making sure each breast received his attention, his lips moved down her stomach, deliberately avoiding her clit as he began to bite and suck hickies onto her thighs. Her fingers threaded themselves into his hair and the small tugs to try and move him, caused a groan to escape.
“You wanted slow, sweetheart.” He got a whine in return, only for it to become a moan a his lips finally found her clit and he began to kitten lick it, his fingers moving to her folds, the slick wetness that he collected, making him smirk.
“Who’s making you feel this good baby?” He slowly slid in two fingers.
“You, Ash.” Came her response as she moved her hips, desperate for more friction. “Please, baby.” The whine was enough for him as he began to pump his fingers in and out, his lips returning to her clit, just as he curled his fingers inside of her.
Hearing her moan his name went straight to his cock, the way her fingers gripped his hair sending a fleeting feeling of pleasure down the back of his spine.
He kept the pace even, listening as her breathing changed pitch and she begged him to cum.
“Cum for me, sweetheart.” His name echoed around the hotel room as he helped her ride her orgasm, pulling his fingers from her and licking a stripe up her folds, her hips twitching from the sensation, making him smirk as he crawled back up to her. Lifting his two fingers, he tapped her lips and she took them into her mouth easily, her tongue swirling around his digits as she cleaned them effortlessly.
He pulled them out with a satisfying pop and positioned himself so that his tip was pressing against her.
“Baby, please.” Was all he needed to hear before he was pushing into her, moans escaping both of them. Instead of harsh grips, and bruised hips, Ashton kept his tough feather light, shifting himself so that he could trail his fingers up her body, her back arching upwards, pressing her chest closer as a whine escaped from her lips.
“I love you.” He murmured as he could feel her body tense, his fingers sliding back between them both and circling her clit. It wasn’t much longer till she came undone from his ministrations, his hips stuttering before his own orgam hit, her name falling from his lips as he pressed them into her neck.
The both of them had a light sheen of sweat, breathing heavy as he pulled out, a noise of disgruntlement escaping from her her before grinned.
“C’mon sweetheart, we’ve got a full day ahead of us and as much as I want to be tangled in the sheets with you, we need to start getting ready.” The pout he received in return only made him laugh as he pulled her from the bed, his lips meeting hers as he pulled her towards the shower.
It didn’t take too long for the pair to get dried and dressed.
As she sat on the edge of the bed, finishing off her makeup, her eyes moved to where Ashton emerged from the bathroom and her heart fluttered. Dressed in navy blue suit pants with a crisp white shirt tucked in, she could feel her breath catch. Her eyes trailed up his body and Ashton found himself smirking as he leaned over and pressed a gentle kiss to the corner of her lips.
“You’ve still got me later, sweetheart. But we’ve got a day ahead of us.” He reminded her, earning another pout which made him laugh as she finished up and grabbed a winter coat. He tugged on the matching jacket before pulling his own winter coat and headed out to the waiting Uber.
Waving to the few fans that were braving the colder weather, the two of them were tucked into the car and the journey was relatively short.
“You gonna finally tell me what you and Matt have been planning now?” Her tone is laced with curiosity and amusement. The grin on his lips is already telling her that he won’t breathe a word of what’s happening.
“Not yet, sweetheart. When we get there, maybe.” And she groaned, making him laugh as she leaned into him, her face pressing against his shoulder.
“You’re the worst. All I want to know is what you’re doing.” Her words were nearly a whine and he almost gave into her plea.
Almost.
“Sorry sweetheart.” He grinned, clearly not sorry at all. She remained in her spot, his hand slipping into hers as they continued the journey in comfortable silence, the car radio playing in the background before it pulled up to what looked like a studio and they both thanked the driver before climbing out.
When she spotted the equipment, equipment she’d seen many-a-time on tour, understanding began to dawn across her features and she could feel her excitement build as she turned to Ashton, who wore a matching look of excitement.
“You’re gonna record a drumming solo?” His lips broke into the widest smile.
“Not quite. Matt and I are gonna do a drum cover of the single. Do something different for a change.” At the beaming smile, all he wanted to do was bottle up the feeling in his chest for the days where he struggled to leave the bed. His heart was bursting.
“Holy shit, and I get to watch?” Just with how soft her voice had gone, Ashton couldn’t help himself as he cupped her face, pressing his lips softly to hers.
“Absolutely. I wanted you here to watch it and it was going to happen. That’s why I made sure you kept this week completely clear.” her head shifts in his grip a little, her lips pressing a soft kiss to the palm of his hand.
“Now it makes a lot more sense. Right, I know you’re itching to make sure the set-up goes right. Go.” His lips met hers once more before he pulled away and gave her a blinding smile before turning to the kits and helping the few techs that had already arrived set up.
Matt turned up not much later, along with the various crew members for the cameras and she stood chatting with a few of them whilst Matt and Ash checked their kits and the sound as well as their in-ears.
Once the cameras were set up and ready to go Ashton caught her eye and she made her way over, walking to the side of the kit and leaning around the mics, pressing her lips against his in a soft kiss.
“You got this baby.” She murmured softly, a small ritual that had been born out of the joke that she was his good luck charm. They weren’t superstitious, but he always felt he played better after her encouragement. And she loved giving him that encouragement.
Once she was out of the shot and comfortably behind the cameras, they started rolling and the music began playing and she watched him in his element.
The way his whole face lit up, how his hair looked, especially when he flicked it back with a single whip of his head backwards, she felt her lips cure into the widest smile as he did what he loved and looked like he was having the time of his life.
When they finished the rolling, impressed that they got it in one take, she had to hold back the scoff.
“At least I know what you were actually doing during those rehearsal days.” She teased him as he finally came away from the kit, his body warm and sweaty. She didn’t protest as his arms wrapped around her.
“Had to get it perfect. We don’t have this space for long today so it really was one of those where we had to get it in three takes or less.” The explanation was met with a look of understanding. Her hand reached up, pressing against his cheek and he leaned into her touch.
“You absolutely killed it, baby. The video is going to look and sound so good.” His eyes softened as he lifted his own hand, taking a hold of hers before bringing her knuckles to his lips, pressing a soft kiss to the skin.
“Thank you sweetheart.” He murmured softly to her, ignoring the various catcalls from the group at the display of affection. It wasn’t a rare one, not by any standard, but with moments like this, it was never often documented and one of the guys managed to capture a photo before she pulled away slightly.
“Go pack up. I’m thinking we grab some take-out food and hide out in the hotel since we don’t have much to do tonight.” He tried to hide the smirk that crossed his lips, making her roll her eyes once she caught it. “Move it buster.”
“Yes ma’am.” He mock bowed to her before moving over to help the other techs pack up.
One of them made a whipping sound and Ashton simply shrugged.
“When you find someone to love as much as I love her, you realise that actually nights like that sound good. I enjoy spending time with her and if that makes me whipped, fuck it.” The others grinned at him as the chatted away, packing the kit up before leaving it to get loaded back up.
Once they were tucked back into the Uber, heading to the take-out place first, she grinned, placing a soft kiss to below his ear.
“When you put the others in their place for making fun of you, well let’s just say you earned yourself dessert.”
He couldn’t keep the grin off his face all night.

[ID: A series of critiques on the new Wonder Woman movie.
The OP has posted four screenshots from the movie of a brown man in traditional dress speaking to a white man in a suit. The brown man says, "All of my land to be returned. And for all the heathens who dare trod upon it to be kept out forever."
In two reblogs, @/papasmokes adds a screenshot of a tumblr reply and a screenshot of the movie. The reply, from @/ptsilenthill, reads "there's like a scene where everyone is naming their wishes and they feature an ambiguous Middle Eastern Guy With a Gun wishing for more bombs." The movie screenshot has a Middle Eastern man kneeling and aiming a gun out of an opening in a stone shelter. He says, "I wish we had nuclear weapons." @/papasmokes has added a wobbly-mouthed, upset emoji in reaction.
The final reblog, by @/nessamiibo, shows a tweet thread by Shtetl-Curious @/EvelKneidel on December 25, 2020. The first tweet reads "They really had a scene in Wonder Woman where Gal Gadot saves four kids playing soccer from getting hit with a missile. Are they out of their fucking minds?!" The tweet is includes a video that has been removed from the website. Additional tweets read, "If you're not fully understanding why this is so... grotesque. In 2014, four young boys were killed by an Israeli mortar strike, while playing soccer on Gaza beach during a bombing campaign that Gal Gadot was vocally supportive of. // Yes thank you for the correction. She did not save them from the missile. She used the missile to save them. / This is not the part that matters. What matters is the white savior fantasy, where she's benevolent to the simple Arab children, which is the opposite of reality."

ML Secret Santa
Merry Christmas @april-rainmay-blossom from your Secret Santa! I was so happy to get a fellow miraculer who loves Marichat as much as I do. I also saw you like a lot of AUs, so I tried a little Peacock Miraculous AU which I hope you like. Have a wonderful Christmas with the people you love!
And big thanks to the mods of @mlsecretsanta for organizing this wonderful event once again.
(Also on Ao3)
The True Gift
“This is amazing, I love it!”
Marinette gushed over her new present: a sketchbook. But it wasn’t just any sketchbook. This one had measurements drawn on the borders of every single page. A perfect gift for a fashion designer.
“Now we can sketch together,” the boy before her said, moving his red bangs away from his masked eyes.
“You’re really not letting that go, are you?” she asked, teasingly. The boy merely shrugged. “Thanks, Paon. It’s a lovely gift.”
A shy smile curved Paon’s lips. Straightening his blue tux-like suit, he cleared his throat and leaned against the cold railing.
“So, you want to… test it out?” he asked quietly. “See if the measurements help?”
“I would love to, but the lights are too dim up here,” Marinette reasoned, looking up at the lights hanging off her balcony, seeming dimer with the fallen snow. “Maybe next time. But, you have to bring your own sketchbook. I won’t start using it until you’re sitting by my side making your own work.”
Paon gave a shy chuckle. “Yes, ma’am—”
“Happy Christmas, Princess.”
Marinette jumped at the sudden familiar voice and whipped her head towards the new visitor, crouching on top of the metal railing.
“Jeez, Chat, you almost gave me a heart attack,” Marinette breathed, a hand on her chest.
“Apawlogies,” Chat Noir said as he stepped down. “Didn’t mean to—ACHOO!”
The boy rubbed his nose as he glared at Le Paon. Marinette couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
“You don’t get to glare at him when you’re the one who barged in.” She crossed her arms.
“He wasn’t supposed to be here,” the blond mumbled.
Paon raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t know we agreed on anything.”
Chat Noir narrowed his eyes. He opened his mouth to say something, but ended up sneezing instead, saliva flying several meters away.
“You need a tissue?” Marinette asked, concern starting to invade her.
“I’m fine,” he grumbled, covering his mouth and nose.
“It’s fine,” Paon intervened. “I have to go anyway. But it was great seeing you, Marinette.”
“You too,” she nodded.
In a swift movement, the redheaded boy leaped to the roof side of the balcony and disappeared into the night. In the meantime, Chat Noir continued scowling to the direction the other superhero left.
“You know he had a crush on you for while, right?” he blurted out suddenly.
Marinette’s brows furrowed. “How would you know that?”
“Uh…” Chat Noir scratched the back of his head. “N-nevermind. Um… W-what’s that?”
Marinette followed the boy’s gaze to the sketchbook she was holding. Her eyes lit up, dismissing what he had said moments before.
“Just a present from Le Paon,” she said, proudly showing him the gift. “It has measurements on the edges of the pages to help me in my designing.”
“Oh,” Chat Noir uttered, lowering his gaze.
Marinette followed his view, to find he was holding a small blue box, with a golden bow.
“Is that for me?” she asked.
Chat Noir stared down at the box in his hands, tapping it hesitantly.
“You know what, I can do better,” he said suddenly, hiding the present behind him. “If you give me a day, I can get you something better. This… This sucks. It’s not cool.”
“No, don’t say that,” Marinette whispered, taking a step closer to the leather-clad hero. “If it comes from you, there’s no way it can be bad.” She then extended a hand. “Please.”
The boy bit his lip. At last, he relented and held out the small present. Softly, Marinette took it in her hands and slowly undid the golden bow that held it together. With the same care, she lifted the lid. She was greeted by what looked like a bracelet. A pink, blue, green and black handmade bracelet. Hanging from it were three charms: one of a pawprint, one of a dress and one of a heart. The heart between the colors blue and green, while the other two between black and green, and pink and blue.
“See,” Chat Noir started, “I know you like pink a lot, so I thought I would use it to represent you, and I was gonna put black to represent me, but it looked too plain, so I thought about how shiny your eyes are, so I added blue, and to make it balanced, I added green, for my eyes, and then I added the charms, like the pawprint, which is me, and the dress is you, because you like designing, and then the heart to signify our friendship, because I couldn’t think of anything else that could mean, like, I care about you, so I just put a heart.”
He took a deep breath as he finished rambling. Marinette could only stare at the thread, how it was fuzzy in parts, like Chat Noir had struggled to place it correctly. Yet, the charms properly divided each color, except for the pink and black, that were divided by a silver chained, attached to the thread.
“I know it’s not exactly useful, like Paon’s gift,” he commented, “but I thought you’d like it.”
Marinette finally looked up, noticing the nervousness crinkling his brows. How he was slightly shivering, but she doubted the cold had anything to do with it. She was still at a loss of words, but she knew that, if she didn’t say something soon, he was going to think she hated it.
“It’s beautiful,” she managed to push out. She took a breath to continue. “I can’t even begin to… It’s so personal…” She took the bracelet out from the box, and held it close to her heart. “I love it. It’s one of the most wonderful gifts I’ve ever gotten.”
By instinct, the designer stood on her toes and kissed Chat Noir’s cheek. Once back on the balls of her feet, she smiled up at him, hoping to reassure him that the words she spoke were true. Meanwhile, the boy’s cheeks took on a rosy color, and his lips parted.
“Would you mind?” she added, handing him the gift.
Chat Noir shook his head. “Sure,” he said at last. Careful not to mess it up with his claws, he hooked the bracelet from the silver chain. Once again, Marinette held it close to her chest, beaming at the boy.
“Thank you,” she said. For a moment, they simply stared at each other. Quiet. Smiling. Until… “Oh!” Marinette slapped a hand to her forehead. “I have something for you too.”
Ignoring his confused ‘really?’, Marinette disappeared through the trapdoor. The second she landed on her bed, she grabbed a rectangular green box sitting on it and rose back up to the balcony.
“Here.” The designer almost shoved the box in his hands.
For a moment, Chat Noir simply stared, awed. When the corner of his mouth turned upward, he pulled on the red ribbon and lifted the top off. Carefully, the boy took out a soft, black scarf.
“I made it myself,” Marinette said. “Black’s a good color on you. I thought it would bring out your eyes.”
Before she finished her sentence, though, Chat Noir had already draped the piece of clothing around his neck. He snuggled it around his cheeks, letting out a wistful breath.
“Thank you for warming a cat in need,” he sighed. “You always know what to do to make me stay.”
“Who said I wanted you stay?” Marinette teased. Chat Noir made a pout.
“Well, who said I wanted to stay?” he teased back.
They stared at each other for a moment, until they couldn’t take it anymore and burst into laughter. Marinette really did love when Chat Noir stopped by. He always knew how to make her smile. And as she laughed, she held on to the bracelet hanging off her wrist, keeping it close to her chest.
Down, on the sidewalk outside the building, stood a quiet boy, smiling as he listened to the sounds of laughter coming from the balcony above.
“Are you sure this is what you want?” a small, blue being with long peacock feathers asked the redhead.
“Yeah,” he said, with a modest nod. “Those two are meant for each other.”
“People fight for love sometimes, you know,” the being said.
“I’m not going to fight for someone I rather have as a friend,” he said, now looking at his little friend. “Besides, the last thing we need is a division in the team. Don’t you think, Duusu?”
Duusu tilted her head. “I guess so,” she said.
“Come one.” The boy beckoned the kwami. “I still have a few more presents to give.”
The redhead started walking, the little goddess floating beside him.
“Can we get some peanuts first? I’m starving,” Duusu asked.
“Only if you promise not to eat the whole can before we get to the next house.”
“Ooohhh, come on. You’re killing me here, Nathanael,” the kwami whined.
But Nathanael merely laughed. A laugh full of warmth that could melt some of the snow that had built up on the sidewalks. Because he knew the little gal was just being dramatic, and she was more than happy to continue spreading the joy.

INDAH – presenting SS16 collection during Swim Week in South Beach Miami at W Hotel 7/2015

YOUTUBE VIDEO OF THE HIGHLIGHTS (0:49) DAILYMOTION VIDEO OF THE FULL SHOW (16:04)
On Sunday, July 19th, 2015, over 500 guests including top media, influencers and buyers, attended the WET Lounge, at the W South Beach, to experience a rocking runway show. Indah debuted its 2016 collection, Collage, during SWIMMIAMI. By definition a collage is assembling different elements to create a new whole, and the designer, Libby Desantis, showcased her new vision with various looks inspired by different eras: 20’s art deco, 70’s punk rock, layered with 80’s glam and 90’s minimalism. Collaborating with artist, Anya Brock, Indah’s color palette is drawn from an abstract painting. Pops of painterly prints and bright hues are contrasted well against darker styles. Handmade with love from Bali, chains, studs, sequins, leather, lattice lace, shag and bones are incorporated into this collection, effortlessly adding an edgy statement to wearable fashion
High wispy hair and loose intricate braids added volume to each look. By using styling products of the highest caliber from René Furterer, and adding depth with luxe hair extensions from Indique, the hairstyle created a rocker chic meets Mad Max style. The look was straight forward, yet simultaneously feminine. It was a smoke show with Ted Gibson’s bold, black smokey eyes and UooLaa’s luscious lashes–creating drama that emulates the collection. FakeBake provided a bronzed goddess look while Zoya provided professional nailcare. Midnight navy and metallic silver polishes popped against the tan models. These colors provided a posh elegance which complimented the tough looks of the metal jewelry provided by Blaine Bowen, which included an assortment of fringed cuffs, braided bracelets and ear-cuffs. Electric Eyewear, available at Nordstrom.com, provided sunnies that mirrored the Collage Collection. Sleek frames with blackout lenses added to the overall look of the Indah woman: a confident, unapologetic mermaid with an “I don’t care” attitude. Indah was also excited to have sponsor support from Airelle, a premier natural skin care line recommended by top dermatologists and plastic surgeons, Silk’n Flash & Go, the at-home solution for painless, permanent hair removal and Braza, a functional, problem solving collection of products that provide women comfort, confidence and a carefree positive dressing experience.

ABOUT SWIM WEEK Even without longtime organizer IMG, Swim Week in 2015 has delivered a bounty of barely-there swimsuit collection for Spring/Summer 2016.
After IMG announced in May that it would be pulling out of what was formerly called Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, following the loss of its title sponsor, those involved had a lot of scrambling to do. Without a strong sponsor or an experienced organizer, could Swim Week even continue in all its stringy, deeply spray-tanned glory? True to the old adage, the show did go on thanks to the (somewhat) cohesive efforts of the affected brands, production companies and publicists.
Kicking off on July 15, this year’s Swim Week has appeared entirely unblemished — or the collections have, anyway. Old pros like Mara Hoffman and Mikoh delivered even more desirable swimwear for spring 2016, while a few less established names — in the swim world at least — brought some newness to the event. Maxim magazine, for one, showed its first-ever swimwear collection, inspired by Brigitte Bardot and chock-full of high-waisted bottoms and floaty coverups. Others, like Colombia-made Maaji Swimwear, went the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show route, going all-out on a kooky theme, this year’s being a tousled, bohemian-era road trip.
But whether it was inspired by Bardot or Route 66, the common thread between each collection was an abundance barely-there, Brazilian wax-requiring swimwear. As with every year, some looks were so nude, so thinly-covered…you’ll just have to see them for yourself. (above text by MAURA BRANNIGAN)
MIAMI SWIM WEEK: A week spread between the sweaty Miami heat of three separate trade shows – Swim Show, Cabana and Hammock – of various personalities, with relevant brands occupying space in the show that suit their vibe. All of these shows are situated within walking distance of each other. Brands also have parties or fashion shows throughout the four days at nearby hotels and pools, making Miami Swim Week super busy and a whole lotta fun.
There is a lot to take in with over 25 external runway shows after 5pm, parties and the three simultaneous trade shows, but it’s plenty pleasing on the eye. There’s hot, Miami energy and it’s awesome to be seeing a preview of swim collections from the hottest brands for 2016.
MIAMI SWIM SHOW: The world’s biggest swim show which occupies the convention centre with hundreds of brands from across the globe. Brands featured that we liked included Seafolly, Billabong, NLP Women, Kopper & Zinc, and Rhythm amongst hundreds of others.
CABANA: This is the boutique show where the brands showcase in two big, cabana-style tents near the beach with coconuts issued to buyers, media and guests on entry. A few of our faves included Beach Riot, Minimale Animale, Tori Praver Swim, Mara Hoffman, Bec and Bridge, Boys and Arrows and Bower Swim.
HAMMOCK: Situated in the W Hotel, with the coolest brands of today occupying the luxury suites to showcase their latest collection with their marketing teams and a bevy of hot models. Leading Instagram swim brands seemed to be the big brands in this year’s Hammock W show including Mikoh, Indah and Frankies Swim.

HISTORY OF THE BIKINI
Time magazine list of top 10 bikinis in popular culture
-Micheline Bernardini models the first-Ever Bikini (1946) -"Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" (1960) -Annette Funicello and Beach Party (1960’s) -The belted Bond-girl bikini (1962) -Sports Illustrated’s first Swimsuit Issue (1964) -Raquel Welch’s fur bikini in One Million Years B.C. (1966) -Phoebe Cates’ Bikini in Fast Times at Ridgemont High -Princess Leia’s golden bikini in Return of the Jedi (1983) -Official uniform of the female Olympic Beach Volleyball team (1996) -Miss America pageant’s bikini debut (1997)
The history of the bikini can be traced back to antiquity. Illustrations of Roman women wearing bikini-like garments during competitive athletic events have been found in several locations. The most famous of them is Villa Romana del Casale. French engineer Louis Réard introduced the modern bikini, modeled by Micheline Bernardini, on July 5, 1946, borrowing the name for his design from the Bikini Atoll, where post-war testing on the atomic bomb was happening.
French women welcomed the design, but the Catholic Church, some media, and a majority of the public initially thought the design was risque or even scandalous. Contestants in the first Miss World beauty pageant wore them in 1951, but the bikini was then banned from the competition. Actress Bridget Bardot drew attention when she was photographed wearing a bikini on the beach during the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Other actresses, including Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner, also gathered press attention when they wore bikinis. During the early 1960’s, the design appeared on the cover of Playboy and Sports Illustrated, giving it additional legitimacy. Ursula Andress made a huge impact when she emerged from the surf wearing what is now an iconic bikini in the James Bond movie Dr. No (1962). The deer skin bikini Raquel Welch wore in the film One Million Years B.C. (1966) turned her into an international sex symbol and was described as a definitive look of the 1960’s.
The bikini gradually grew to gain wide acceptance in Western society. According to French fashion historian Olivier Saillard, the bikini is perhaps the most popular type of female beachwear around the globe because of "the power of women, and not the power of fashion". As he explains, "The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women." By the early 2000’s, bikinis had become a US $ 811 million business annually, and boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and the sun tanning.
Necklines and midriff
By the 1930’s, necklines plunged at the back, sleeves disappeared and sides were cut away and tightened. With the development of new clothing materials, particularly latex and nylon, through the 1930’s swimsuits gradually began hugging the body, with shoulder straps that could be lowered for tanning. Women’s swimwear of the 1930’s and 1940’s incorporated increasing degrees of midriff exposure. Coco Chanel made suntans fashionable, and in 1932 French designer Madeleine Vionnet offered an exposed midriff in an evening gown. They were seen a year later in Gold Diggers of 1933. The Busby Berkeley film Footlight Parade of 1932 showcases aqua-choreography that featured bikinis. Dorothy Lamour’s The Hurricane (1937) also showed two-piece bathing suits.
The 1934 film, Fashions of 1934 featured chorus girls wearing two-piece outfits which look identical to modern bikinis. In 1934, a National Recreation Association study on the use of leisure time found that swimming, encouraged by the freedom of movement the new swimwear designs provided, was second only to movies in popularity as free time activity out of a list of 94 activities. In 1935 American designer Claire McCardell cut out the side panels of a maillot-style bathing suit, the bikini’s forerunner. The 1938 invention of the Telescopic Watersuit in shirred elastic cotton ushered into the end the era of wool. Cotton sun-tops, printed with palm trees, and silk or rayon pajamas, usually with a blouse top, became popular by 1939. Wartime production during World War II required vast amounts of cotton, silk, nylon, wool, leather, and rubber. In 1942 the United States War Production Board issued Regulation L-85, cutting the use of natural fibers in clothing and mandating a 10% reduction in the amount of fabric in women’s beachwear. To comply with the regulations, swimsuit manufacturers produced two-piece suits with bare midriffs.
Postwar
Fabric shortage continued for some time after the end of the war. Two-piece swimsuits without the usual skirt panel and other excess material started appearing in the US when the government ordered a 10% reduction in fabric used in woman’s swimwear in 1943 as wartime rationing. By that time, two-piece swimsuits were frequent on American beaches. The July 9, 1945, Life shows women in Paris wearing similar items. Hollywood stars like Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner tried similar swimwear or beachwear. Pin ups of Hayworth and Esther Williams in the costume were widely distributed. The most provocative swimsuit was the 1946 Moonlight Buoy, a bottom and a top of material that weighed only eight ounces. What made the Moonlight Buoy distinctive was a large cork buckle attached to the bottoms, which made it possible to tie the top to the cork buckle and splash around au naturel while keeping both parts of the suit afloat. Life magazine had a photo essay on the Moonlight Buoy and wrote, "The name of the suit, of course, suggests the nocturnal conditions under which nude swimming is most agreeable."
American designer Adele Simpson, a Coty American Fashion Critics’ Awards winner (1947) and a notable alumna of the New York art school Pratt Institute, who believed clothes must be comfortable and practical, designed a large part of her swimwear line with one-piece suits that were considered fashionable even in early 1980’s. This was when Cole of California started marketing revealing prohibition suits and Catalina Swimwear introduced almost bare-back designs. Teen magazines of late 1940’s and 1950’s featured designs of midriff-baring suits and tops. However, midriff fashion was stated as only for beaches and informal events and considered indecent to be worn in public. Hollywood endorsed the new glamour with films such as Neptune’s Daughter (1949) in which Esther Williams wore provocatively named costumes such as "Double Entendre" and "Honey Child". Williams, who also was an Amateur Athletic Union champion in the 100 meter freestyle (1939) and an Olympics swimming finalist (1940), also portrayed Kellerman in the 1952 film Million Dollar Mermaid (titled as The One Piece Bathing Suit in UK).
Swimwear of the 1940’s, 50’s and early 60’s followed the silhouette mostly from early 1930’s. Keeping in line with the ultra-feminine look dominated by Dior, it evolved into a dress with cinched waists and constructed bust-lines, accessorized with earrings, bracelets, hats, scarves, sunglasses, hand bags and cover-ups. Many of these pre-bikinis had fancy names like Double Entendre, Honey Child (to maximize small bosoms), Shipshape (to minimize large bosoms), Diamond Lil (trimmed with rhinestones and lace), Swimming In Mink (trimmed with fur across the bodice) and Spearfisherman (heavy poplin with a rope belt for carrying a knife), Beau Catcher, Leading Lady, Pretty Foxy, Side Issue, Forecast, and Fabulous Fit. According to Vogue the swimwear had become more of "state of dress, not undress" by mid-1950’s.
The modern bikini
French fashion designer Jacques Heim, who owned a beach shop in the French Riviera resort town of Cannes, introduced a minimalist two-piece design in May 1946 which he named the "Atome," after the smallest known particle of matter. The bottom of his design was just large enough to cover the wearer’s navel.
At the same time, Louis Réard, a French automotive and mechanical engineer, was running his mother’s lingerie business near Les Folies Bergères in Paris. He noticed women on St. Tropez beaches rolling up the edges of their swimsuits to get a better tan and was inspired to produce a more minimal design. He trimmed additional fabric off the bottom of the swimsuit, exposing the wearer’s navel for the first time. Réard’s string bikini consisted of four triangles made from 30 square inches (194 cm2) of fabric printed with a newspaper pattern.
When Réard sought a model to wear his design at his press conference, none of the usual models would wear the suit, so he hired 19 year old nude dancer Micheline Bernardini from the Casino de Paris. He introduced his design to the media and public on July 5, 1946, in Paris at Piscine Molitor, a public pool in Paris. Réard held the press conference five days after the first test of a nuclear device (nicknamed Able) over the Bikini Atoll during Operation Crossroads. His swimsuit design shocked the press and public because it was the first to reveal the wearer’s navel.
To promote his new design, Heim hired skywriters to fly above the Mediterranean resort advertising the Atome as "the world’s smallest bathing suit." Not to be outdone by Heim, Réard hired his own skywriters three weeks later to fly over the French Riviera advertising his design as "smaller than the smallest bathing suit in the world."
Heim’s design was the first to be worn on the beach, but the name given by Réard stuck with the public. Despite significant social resistance, Réard received more than 50,000 letters from fans. He also initiated a bold ad campaign that told the public a two-piece swimsuit was not a genuine bikini "unless it could be pulled through a wedding ring." According to Kevin Jones, curator and fashion historian at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, "Réard was ahead of his time by about 15 to 20 years. Only women in the vanguard, mostly upper-class European women embraced it."
Social resistance
Bikini sales did not pick up around the world as women stuck to traditional two-piece swimsuits. Réard went back to designing conventional knickers to sell in his mother’s shop. According to Kevin Jones, curator and fashion historian at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, "Réard was ahead of his time by about 15 to 20 years. Only women in the vanguard, mostly upper-class European women embraced it, just like the upper-class European women who first cast off their corsets after World War I." It was banned in the French Atlantic coastline, Spain, Belgium and Italy, three countries neighboring France, as well as Portugal and Australia, and it was prohibited in some US states, and discouraged in others.
In 1951, the first Miss World contest (originally the Festival Bikini Contest), was organized by Eric Morley. When the winner, Kiki Håkansson from Sweden, was crowned in a bikini, countries with religious traditions threatened to withdraw delegates. Håkansson remains the first and last Miss World to be crowned in her bikini, a crowning that was condemned by Pope Pius XII who declared the swimsuit to be sinful. Bikinis were banned from beauty pageants around the world after the controversy. In 1949 the Los Angeles Times reported that Miss America Bebe Shopp on her visit to Paris said she did not approve the bikini for American girls, though she did not mind French girls wearing them. Actresses in movies like My Favorite Brunette (1947) and the model on a 1948 cover of LIFE were shown in traditional two-piece swimwear, not the bikini.
In 1950, Time magazine interviewed American swimsuit mogul Fred Cole, owner of Cole of California, and reported that he had "little but scorn for France’s famed Bikinis," because they were designed for "diminutive Gallic women". "French girls have short legs," he explained, "Swimsuits have to be hiked up at the sides to make their legs look longer." Réard himself described it as a two-piece bathing suit which "reveals everything about a girl except for her mother’s maiden name." Even Esther Williams commented, "A bikini is a thoughtless act." But, popularity of the charms of Pin-up queen and Hollywood star Williams were to vanish along with pre-bikinis with fancy names over the next few decades. Australian designer Paula Straford introduced the bikini to Gold Coast in 1952. In 1957, Das moderne Mädchen (The Modern Girl) wrote, "It is unthinkable that a decent girl with tact would ever wear such a thing." Eight years later a Munich student was punished to six days cleaning work at an old home because she had strolled across the central Viktualienmarkt square, Munich in a bikini.
The Cannes connection
Despite the controversy, some in France admired "naughty girls who decorate our sun-drenched beaches". Brigitte Bardot, photographed wearing similar garments on beaches during the Cannes Film Festival (1953) helped popularize the bikini in Europe in the 1950’s and created a market in the US. Photographs of Bardot in a bikini, according to The Guardian, turned Saint-Tropez into the bikini capital of the world. Cannes played a crucial role in the career of Brigitte Bardot, who in turn played a crucial role in promoting the Festival, largely by starting the trend of being photographed in a bikini at her first appearance at the festival, with Bardot identified as the original Cannes bathing beauty. In 1952, she wore a bikini in Manina, the Girl in the Bikini (1952) (released in France as Manina, la fille sans voiles), a film which drew considerable attention due to her scanty swimsuit. During the 1953 Cannes Film Festival, she worked with her husband and agent Roger Vadim, and garnered a lot of attention when she was photographed wearing a bikini on every beach in the south of France.
Like Esther Williams did a decade earlier, Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot all used revealing swimwear as career props to enhance their sex appeal, and it became more accepted in parts of Europe when worn by fifties "love goddess" actresses such as Bardot, Anita Ekberg and Sophia Loren. British actress Diana Dors had a mink bikini made for her during the 1955 Venice Film Festival and wore it riding in a gondola down Venice’s Grand Canal past St. Mark’s Square.
In Spain, Benidorm played a similar role as Cannes. Shortly after the bikini was banned in Spain, Pedro Zaragoza, the mayor of Benidorm convinced dictator Francisco Franco that his town needed to legalize the bikini to draw tourists. In 1959, General Franco agreed and the town became a popular tourist destination. Interestingly, in less than four years since Franco’s death in 1979, Spanish beaches and women had gone topless.
Legal and moral resistance
The swimsuit was declared sinful by the Vatican and was banned in Spain, Portugal and Italy, three countries neighboring France, as well as Belgium and Australia, and it remained prohibited in many US states. As late as in 1959, Anne Cole, a US swimsuit designer and daughter of Fred Cole, said about a Bardot bikini, "It’s nothing more than a G-string. It’s at the razor’s edge of decency." In July that year the New York Post searched for bikinis around New York City and found only a couple. Writer Meredith Hall wrote in her memoir that till 1965 one could get a citation for wearing a bikini in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.
In 1951, the first Miss World contest, originally the Festival Bikini Contest, was organized by Eric Morley as a mid-century advertisement for swimwear at the Festival of Britain. The press welcomed the spectacle and referred to it as Miss World, and Morley registered the name as a trademark. When, the winner Kiki Håkansson from Sweden, was crowned in a bikini, countries with religious traditions threatened to withdraw delegates. The bikinis were outlawed and evening gowns introduced instead. Håkansson remains the only Miss World crowned in a bikini, a crowning that was condemned by the Pope. Bikini was banned from beauty pageants around the world after the controversy. Catholic-majority countries like Belgium, Italy, Spain and Australia also banned the swimsuit that same year.
The National Legion of Decency pressured Hollywood to keep bikinis from being featured in Hollywood movies. The Hays production code for US movies, introduced in 1930 but not strictly enforced till 1934, allowed two-piece gowns but prohibited navels on screen. But between the introduction and enforcement of the code two Tarzan movies, Tarzan, the Ape Man (1932) and Tarzan and His Mate (1934), were released in which actress Maureen O’Sullivan wore skimpy bikini-like leather outfits. Film historian Bruce Goldstein described her clothes in the first film as "It’s a loincloth open up the side. You can see loin." All at sea was allowed in the USA in 1957 after all bikini-type clothes were removed from the film. The girl in the bikini was allowed in Kansas after all the bikini close ups were removed from the film in 1959.
In reaction to the introduction of the bikini in Paris, American swimwear manufacturers compromised cautiously by producing their own similar design that included a halter and a midriff-bottom variation. Though size makes all the difference in a bikini, early bikinis often covered the navel. When the navel showed in pictures, it was airbrushed out by magazines like Seventeen. Navel-less women ensured the early dominance of European bikini makers over their American counterparts. By the end of the decade a vogue for strapless styles developed, wired or bound for firmness and fit, along with a taste for bare-shouldered two-pieces called Little Sinners. But, it was the halterneck bikini that caused the most moral controversy because of its degree of exposure. So much so as bikini designs called "Huba Huba" and "Revealation" were withdrawn from fashion parades in Sydney as immodest.
Rise to popularity
The appearance of bikinis kept increasing both on screen and off. The sex appeal prompted film and television productions, including Dr. Strangelove. They include the surf movies of the early 1960’s. In 1960, Brian Hyland’s song "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" inspired a bikini-buying spree. By 1963, the movie Beach Party, starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, followed by Muscle Beach Party (1964), Bikini Beach (1964), and Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) that depicted teenage girls wearing bikinis, frolicking in the sand with boys, and having a great time.
The beach films led a wave of films that made the bikini pop-culture symbol. In the sexual revolution in 1960’s America, bikinis became quickly popular. Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Gina Lollobrigida, and Jane Russell helped further the growing popularity of bikinis. Pin-up posters of Monroe, Mansfield, Hayworth, Bardot and Raquel Welch also contributed significantly to its increasing popularity. In 1962, Playboy featured a bikini on its cover for the first time. Two years later, Sports Illustrated featured Berlin-born fashion model Babette March on the cover wearing a white bikini. The issue was the first Swimsuit Issue. It gave the bikini legitimacy, became an annual publication and an American pop-culture staple, and sells millions of copies each year. In 1965, a woman told Time it was "almost square" not to wear one. In 1967 the magazine wrote that 65% of "the young set" were wearing bikinis.
When Jayne Mansfield and her husband Miklós Hargitay toured for stage shows, newspapers wrote that Mansfield convinced the rural population that she owned more bikinis than anyone. She showed a fair amount of her 40-inch (1,000 mm) bust, as well as her midriff and legs, in the leopard-spot bikini she wore for her stage shows. Kathryn Wexler of The Miami Herald wrote, "In the beginning as we know it, there was Jayne Mansfield. Here she preens in leopard-print or striped bikinis, sucking in air to showcase her well noted physical assets." Her leopard-skin bikini remains one of the earlier specimens of the fashion.
In 1962, Bond Girl Ursula Andress emerged from the sea wearing a white bikini in Dr. No. The scene has been named one of the most memorable of the series. Channel 4 declared it the top bikini moment in film history, Virgin Media puts it ninth in its top ten, and top in the Bond girls. The Herald (Glasgow) put the scene as best ever on the basis of a poll. It also helped shape the career of Ursula Andress, and the look of the quintessential Bond movie. Andress said that she owed her career to that white bikini, remarking, "This bikini made me into a success. As a result of starring in Dr. No as the first Bond girl, I was given the freedom to take my pick of future roles and to become financially independent." In 2001, the Dr. No bikini worn by Andress in the film sold at auction for US$61,500. That white bikini has been described as a "defining moment in the sixties liberalization of screen eroticism". Because of the shocking effect from how revealing it was at the time, she got referred to by the joke nickname "Ursula Undress". According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, "So iconic was the look that it was repeated 40 years later by Halle Berry in the Bond movie Die Another Day."
Raquel Welch’s fur bikini in One Million Years B.C. (1966) gave the world the most iconic bikini shot of all time and the poster image became an iconic moment in cinema history. The poster image of the deer skin bikini in One Million Years B.C. made her an instant pin-up girl. Welch was featured in the studio’s advertising as "wearing mankind’s first bikini" and the bikini was later described as a "definitive look of the 1960’s". Her role wearing the leather bikini raised Welch to a fashion icon and the photo of her in the bikini became a best-selling pinup poster. One author said, "although she had only three lines in the film, her luscious figure in a fur bikini made her a star and the dream girl of millions of young moviegoers". In 2011, Time listed Welch’s B.C. bikini in the "Top Ten Bikinis in Pop Culture".
In the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, Star Wars’ Princess Leia Organa was captured by Jabba the Hutt and forced to wear a metal bikini complete with shackles. The costume was made of brass and was so uncomfortable that actress Carrie Fisher described it as "what supermodels will eventually wear in the seventh ring of hell." The "slave Leia" look is often imitated by female fans at Star Wars conventions. In 1997, 51 years after the bikini’s debut, and 77 years after the Miss America Pageant was founded, contestants were allowed wear two-piece swimsuits, not just the swimsuits (nicknamed "bulletproof vests") traditionally issued by the pageant. Two of the 17 swimsuit finalists wore two-piece swimsuits, and Erika Kauffman, representing Hawaii, wore the briefest bikini of all and won the swimsuit competition. In 2010, the International Federation of Bodybuilders recognized Bikini as a new competitive category.
In India
Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore appeared in a bikini in An Evening in Paris (1967), a film mostly remembered for the first bikini appearance of an Indian actress. She also posed in a bikini for the glossy Filmfare magazine. The costume shocked the conservative Indian audience, but it also set a trend of bikini-clad actresses carried forward by Parveen Babi (in Yeh Nazdeekiyan, 1982), Zeenat Aman (in Heera Panna 1973; Qurbani, 1980) and Dimple Kapadia (in Bobby, 1973) in the early 1970’s. Wearing a bikini put her name in the Indian press as one of Bollywood’s ten hottest actresses of all time, and was a transgression of female identity through a reversal of the state of modesty, which functions as a signifier of femininity in Bombay films. By 2005, it became usual for actors in Indian films to change outfits a dozen times in a single song — starting with a chiffon sari and ending up wearing a bikini. But, when Tagore was the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification in 2005, she expressed concerns about the rise of the bikini in Indian films.
Acceptance
In France, Réard’s company folded in 1988, four years after his death. By that year the bikini made up nearly 20% of swimsuit sales, more than any other model in the US. As skin cancer awareness grew and a simpler aesthetic defined fashion in the 1990s, sales of the skimpy bikini decreased dramatically. The new swimwear code was epitomized by surf star Malia Jones, who appeared on the June 1997 cover of Shape Magazine wearing a halter top two-piece for rough water. After the 90’s, however, the bikini came back again. US market research company NPD Group reported that sales of two-piece swimsuits nationwide jumped 80% in two years. On one hand the one-piece made a big comeback in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, on the other bikinis became briefer with the string bikini in the 1970’s and 80’s.
The "-kini family" (as dubbed by author William Safire), including the "-ini sisters" (as dubbed by designer Anne Cole) has grown to include a large number of subsequent variations, often with a hilarious lexicon — string bikini, monokini or numokini (top part missing), seekini (transparent bikini), tankini (tank top, bikini bottom), camikini (camisole top and bikini bottom), hikini, thong, slingshot, minimini, teardrop, and micro. In just one major fashion show in 1985, there were two-piece suits with cropped tank tops instead of the usual skimpy bandeaux, suits that are bikinis in front and one-piece behind, suspender straps, ruffles, and daring, navel-baring cutouts. To meet the fast changing tastes, some of the manufacturers have made a business out of making made-to-order bikinis in around seven minutes. The world’s most expensive bikini, made up of over 150 carats (30 g) of flawless diamonds and worth a massive £20 million, was designed in February 2006 by Susan Rosen.
Actresses in action films like Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003) and Blue Crush (2002) have made the two-piece "the millennial equivalent of the power suit", according to Gina Bellafonte of The New York Times, On September 9, 1997, Miss Maryland Jamie Fox was the first contestant in 50 years to compete in a two-piece swimsuit to compete in the Preliminary Swimsuit Competition at the Miss America Pageant. PETA used celebrities like Pamela Anderson, Traci Bingham and Alicia Mayer wearing a bikini made of iceberg-lettuce for an advertisement campaign to promote vegetarianism. A protester from Columbia University used a bikini as a message board against a New York City visit by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
By the end of the century, the bikini went on to become the most popular beachwear around the globe, according to French fashion historian Olivier Saillard due to "the power of women, and not the power of fashion". As he explains, "The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women", though one survey tells 85% of all bikinis never touch the water. According to Beth Dincuff Charleston, research associate at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "The bikini represents a social leap involving body consciousness, moral concerns, and sexual attitudes." By the early 2000’s, bikinis had become a US $811 million business annually, according to the NPD Group, a consumer and retail information company. The bikini has boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and the sun tanning industries.
Continued controversies
The bikini remained a hot topic for the news media. In May 2011, Barcelona, Spain made it illegal to wear bikinis in public except in areas near the beaches. Violators face fines of between 120 and 300 euros. In 2012, two students of St. Theresa’s College in Cebu, the Philippines were barred from attending their graduation ceremony for "ample body exposure" because their bikini pictures were posted on Facebook. The students sued the college and won a temporary stay in a regional court.
In May 2013, Cambridge University banned the Wyverns Club of Magdalene College from arranging its annual bikini jelly wrestling. In June 2013, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who also is interested in fashion, produced a bikini for her clothing line that is designed to be worn by girls 4 to 8 years old. She was criticized for sexualizing young children by Claude Knight of Kidscape, a British foundation that strives to prevent child abuse. He commented, "We remain very opposed to the sexualization of children and of childhood … is a great pity that such trends continue and that they carry celebrity endorsement."
Four women were arrested over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for indecent exposure when they wore thong bikinis that exposed their buttocks. In June 2013, the British watchdog agency Advertising Standards Authority banned a commercial that showed men in an office fantasizing about their colleague, played by Pamela Anderson, in a bikini for degrading women.
